Position Summary: The Project Engineering Manager reports to the Director, Engineering and is primarily responsible to lead the execution of projects related to new equipment, equipment relocations, warehouse and other manufacturing, process and plant-wide improvement projects for Thorne Research operations. The Project Engineering Manager will be required to manage small to large cross functional teams to take a design or project from initial concept to a fully functional production machine, system or process.

Responsibilities
  • Guide the Project and Process Engineering teams in selection, prioritization and execution of critical projects while ensuring alignment with company's key objectives and goals.
  • Hire and retain a high-performing technical team and create a positive, collaborative and safe work environment.
  • Develop comprehensive business cases and acquire leadership approvals on CapEx projects.
  • Develop detailed project schedules and communicate periodic project progress to leadership.
  • Collaborate with different departments at Thorne to ensure timely completion of critical project tasks.
  • Create detailed equipment specifications working with Engineering, Safety, Maintenance and Suppliers/Vendors.
  • Create detailed Request for Quote (RFQ) documents for large and complex projects.
  • Review and compare competing bids from vendors and suppliers and negotiate the best technical solutions for Thorne.
  • Lead and manage equipment installations including utilities, start-up testing and commissioning.
  • Work with the Controls Group to generate detailed strategies for Process Monitoring & Controls.
  • Collaborate with Validations Group to plan and help execute equipment validations such as IQ/OQ/PQ
  • Create, review and update as necessary foundational engineering systems for Engineering Drawings, Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Project Management, Risk Management and other similar systems.
  • Review detailed plans with project teams and help execute Factory and Site Acceptance Testing (FAT, SAT) including any offsite travel in support of the qualification processes.
  • Provide guidance, develop and mentor junior Engineers as well as function as the delegate for the Engineering Director.
  • Research and maintain knowledge of new manufacturing technologies as applicable to Thorne and provide executable recommendations to leadership.
  • Calculate project costs in detail and compile budgets for planning and justification purposes.

Production Support responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Support company-wide continuous improvement projects.
  • Perform machinery troubleshooting if designated as Subject Matter Expert (SME).
  • Expert level SOP / Change Control review for technical documents if necessary.
  • Identify gaps in equipment capabilities and recommend alternatives to meet production targets.
  • Provide technical support and advice as required in response to process and equipment problems.

Additional Operations Support that may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Evaluate technical data and provide reports to management on a variety of topics as requested.
  • Support operations with AutoCAD layouts/drawings and design SolidWorks models as directed.
  • Perform Corrective Action responses to various audit or production related problems as directed.

What You Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, with documented combination of education and experience readily available.
  • 7-10 years' hands-on experience in Project Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering in an FDA-regulated environment is highly preferred.
  • Experience in Plant Expansion, Automation, High Speed Packaging Lines or similar projects is a plus.
  • Must be highly skilled and hands-on with SolidWorks with extensive background in mechanical designs and guiding Project Engineers in solving difficult design challenges.
  • Must be able to create work-cell and production line layouts in AutoCAD, then present & build consensus.
  • Must be able to compile detailed project timelines in MS Project and actively manage resource allocation.
  • Must be able to guide and lead cross-functional teams in developing PFMEAs at a SME level.
  • Prior experience in working with and mentoring junior Engineers or Engineering Interns is required.
  • Ability to acquire the necessary knowledge in all areas of manufacturing, including: Mixing, High Speed Encapsulation, Low Speed Encapsulation, Bottling (capsule and powder), Labeling, production components, raw materials and product powders.
  • Ability to evaluate the proper balance of quality, cost and production output to make solution and goal-oriented decisions yet be able to distinguish high risk decisions that should be taken to the proper level of management when the risks to quality, cost and production are significant.
