This classification is part of a structured internship program designed to provide undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students with practical experience in preparation for professional careers in administrative, managerial, technical, and engineering-related occupations. Interns gain exposure to real-world applications by integrating periods of academic study with hands-on work assignments in their chosen discipline.
Examples of Essential Duties:- Assists the Engineering Manager and Engineering Department personnel with various tasks and projects.
- Communicates and documents field observations.
- Completes independent assignments as directed.
- Performs accurate field measurements and related fieldwork activities.
- Receives practical training in applying theories, concepts, and methodologies relevant to the work of the department or program.
- Prepares reports, summaries, and other documentation as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- Knowledge of GIS, AutoCAD, Microsoft office suite and traffic and engineering terminology.
- Knowledge of principles, theories, and concepts related to the engineering discipline and the ability to apply them effectively in practical settings.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, with the ability to create, edit, format, and organize documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Skill in the use of Word and Excel, including tables, formulas, templates, and document formatting, as well as other departmental technologies.
- Ability to understand and apply traffic engineering terminology.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications: Current enrollment (matriculation) in an accredited Associate's, Bachelor's, or advanced degree program determined by the Director of Human Resources or designee to be appropriate preparation for placement in the designated department.
Appointment: Permanent status cannot be attained in this classification. This class may not be used to circumvent employment status or benefit eligibility requirements. Incumbents may not work more than six (6) months, a maximum of 120 days or the equivalent of 840 hours, within any twelve-month period pending funding allotment. Positions in this class are used strictly for training purposes.
For consideration, students must submit to the Town's Human Resources Department a verification letter from the institution's Office of the Registrar confirming current educational enrollment. Interns may or may not be affiliated with a cooperative education program.
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination may be required.
