We are SLR Consulting (US), a coast-to-coast team of 500+ advisory, environmental/engineering, and regulatory professionals. We deliver environmental and sustainability services to our clients through the integration of over 30 advisory, technical environmental, and engineering disciplines to help clients address some of their most complex challenges around sustainability. As our new Senior Substation Engineer, you will lead electrical substation design and technical advisory services for utility-scale solar and energy storage projects. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, enjoys technical challenges, and thrives in a highly collaborative and dynamic environment.

Responsibilities
• Oversee and review all aspects of medium- and high-voltage substation system design for utility-scale energy storage and solar projects, ensuring technical accuracy, regulatory compliance, and adherence to SLR and industry standards.
• Develop and take technical leadership of substation general arrangement drawings, plan and elevation drawings, grounding plans, cable routing plans, underground/overhead designs, SCADA details, and substation details.
• Develop and take technical leadership of design calculations, insulation coordination studies, and protection settings.
• Review equipment shop drawings, installation manuals, specification documents, test plans, control narratives, client requirements, and AHJ requirements.
• Provide advisory services and project technical support for conceptual activities, OE/IE engagements, interconnection process, commissioning, and ongoing construction.
• Review engineering team deliverables for technical quality and consistency; set and uphold drawing architecture standards and best practices across the design team.
• Design substation grounding systems using CDEGS and in accordance with IEEE 80 and 81 and other applicable standards.
• Perform power system studies including underground ampacity, load flow, protective coordination, short-circuit, and arc flash analysis using ETAP.
• Design substation shielding/lightning systems using Rolling Sphere and Protective Angle methods, and other applicable methods.
• Prepare substation electrical bill of materials for client review and procurement activities.
• Prepare construction specifications documents using MasterSpec and CNS systems.
• Ensure project designs comply with relevant codes and standards (e.g., NEC, CEC, IEEE, building and fire code).
• Conduct on-site field visits to support design verification, construction, and commissioning activities.
• Recommend and implement continuous improvements in design practices, project execution processes, and product performance.
• Support business development efforts by providing technical input on proposals, estimating engineering scope, and advising on system configuration.

• The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $140,000. Final agreed upon compensation will be commensurate with individual education, professional designation, experience, internal parity, and location.

Qualifications
• Minimum 8 years of experience in substation engineering
• Must be an active Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
• Proficient with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and power system analysis tools (e.g., CDEGS, ETAP, SKM, PSCAD)
• Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and National Electrical Code (NEC)
• Familiarity with relevant standards such as IEEE 80, IEEE 81, CSA 22.2 No. 107.1, UL 1741, and NFPA 855 is an asset
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites
