Material Engineer - Metallurgist

Job Description

Position Summary: This purpose of this job description is to reflect consistency of positions throughout the corporation; capture relevant education, training , skills and experience; and determine the necessary competence for the personnel performing work affecting product quality.

Essential Job Functions include, but not limited to, the following:
  • Manage internal material qualification process for aluminum alloys.
  • Manage external customer qualification process for aluminum extrusions.
  • Maintain internal material standards
  • Manage internal material specifications and engineering data.
  • Work includes a combination additive manufacturing, mechanical properties analysis, performance and durability evaluations, and microstructural analysis.
  • The employee develops processes and procedures to carry out work, uses laboratory equipment and computational tools to obtain technical data, interprets results, and reports results of the work conducted.
  • Create and provide sound reporting on testing activities to the Advance Product Development, Business Units, and engineering organization.
  • Operate equipment in the materials lab.
  • Support new program launches through material qualification.
  • Travel may also be required for support of qualification activities and customer/supplier visits.
  • Additional functions not specifically outlined in this position description as directed by the leader.

Requirements:
  • Background in Material Science and Engineering or related engineering disciplining with emphasis in metallurgy and metallurgical engineering.
  • Ability to complete tensile testing, hardness testing (macro and micro), metallographic preparation and analysis
  • Previous experience in an engineering test laboratory.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft with previous CAE experience preferred.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors degree in Material science and Engineering or Metallurgical Engineer
  • 5 years experience in the Aluminum industry
