Design Leadership: Lead HVAC and plumbing system design (load calcs, equipment selection, duct/piping sizing, schematics, controls intent).
Code & Compliance: Ensure designs meet IBC/IMC/IPC/IFC, energy codes (IECC/ASHRAE 90.1), and owner standards; prepare variance/permit packages.
Seal & QA/QC: Stamp drawings/specs; perform peer reviews, QA/QC checklists, and design risk assessments.
Construction Support: Respond to RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and change orders; support value engineering and cost/schedule impacts.
Field Coordination: Conduct site surveys, verify existing conditions, attend OAC/coordination meetings, and support commissioning/functional testing.
BIM/VDC Collaboration: Guide model content (LOD, clearances, access, slopes for drains/condensate), resolve clashes with BIM teams, and validate as-builts.
Water/Drainage Systems: Design hot/cold water, DWV, storm, specialty/process piping, backflow, and water heating systems with Legionella risk mitigation best practices.
Documentation: Produce stamped drawing sets, specifications, basis-of-design narratives, and calculation packages.
Client & Agency Interface: Present technical solutions to owners, architects, GCs, AHJs; lead design workshops and design-assist efforts.
Standards & Continuous Improvement: Develop templates, details, and calculation tools; mentor junior engineers and drafters.
Must-Haves:
Licensure: Active PE (Mechanical or Plumbing discipline) in [State]; ability to obtain additional state licensure via comity within 6-12 months.
Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering (or related). MS a plus.
Experience: 6-12+ years in MEP design or design-build with significant plumbing and mechanical project exposure (healthcare, higher-ed, life science, industrial, or large commercial preferred).
Technical Tools: Revit (MEP), AutoCAD, Bluebeam; load calc and duct/pipe sizing tools (e.g., Trane TRACE/Carrier HAP), hydraulic sizing for domestic water/DWV; familiarity with Navisworks/Client a plus.
Construction Savvy: Proven coordination with GCs, trade contractors, and fabricators; understanding of means/methods, prefabrication, and startup/commissioning.
