Job Description Summary

The purpose of this job is to provide advanced engineering services and support. Responsibilities include surveying and researching site conditions for infrastructure, utilities, landscaping, transportation, and other related municipal projects; preparing and revising technical drawings using AutoCAD and recommending drafting standards; and conducting fieldwork. The position may also maintain spatial data within GIS, perform plan reviews, conduct traffic counts, and assess applicable fees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description
  • Prepares and reviews drawings, diagrams, 3D renderings, and construction plans for engineering projects utilizing AutoCAD.

  • Maintains AutoCAD drafting standards, base drawing, and standard details.

  • Reviews plans for drawing standard conformance.

  • Conducts field work including surveys and field studies.

  • Compiles statistical data and creates reports.

  • Creates and maintains records.

  • Maintains spatial data in GIS.

  • Assesses and invoices utility service fees, per city code of ordinance, as necessary.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • No supervisory authority. Work does require providing guidance and training to others.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associate's Degree in construction management, engineering technology or similar field preferred.

  • 3 to 5 years' experience as an engineering technician

Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position

Knowledge of:
  • Principles, practices, and methods of civil engineering, including such specialties as land surveying and mapping, hydraulics, structures, and/or sanitation.

  • Maps, deeds, plats, plans, codes, regulations and standards.

  • Standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of building trades

  • Algebra, geometry, calculus, and engineering formulas

Skill in:
  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.

  • Collecting, organizing, and analyzing complex and/or technical data.

  • Utilizing engineering and GIS software.

  • Utilizing surveying equipment and software.

Ability to:
  • Work from blueprints, plans, and sketches.

This is the advanced level in the Engineering Technician job series. Engineering Technician II works with increased autonomy from Engineering Technician I, completes more complex work, recommends departmental standards, and reviews other employees' work.

Starting Salary
$25.82/hr. to $31.75/hr. (Minimum to Midpoint); commensurate with training/experience

This Engineering Technician position will be focused on the water utility. Primary duties will include plan review and drafting of construction plans as well as assisting with other efforts of the engineering group in the water utility.
