Job Description

J.F. White Contracting Company's Mechanical Division is seeking a driven and detail-oriented Mechanical Project Engineer to support the delivery of complex HVAC and mechanical construction projects throughout Greater Boston. This role is ideal for an early-to mid-career professional looking to build a strong foundation in mechanical construction, working directly alongside experienced Project Managers and Superintendents on technically challenging, high-value projects. The position is primarily office-based with regular site visits and occasional relocation to a field construction office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage project document control including submittals, RFIs, shop drawings, closeout packages, and quality and safety records
  • Track and log contract deliverables, correspondence, and document transmittals to ensure timely and complete responses
  • Assist Project Managers in developing project schedules, processing schedule updates, and identifying and supporting delay mitigation strategies
  • Support project cost control efforts including tracking budgets, commitments, and change order logs
  • Assist the estimating department with material quantity takeoffs and the solicitation of vendor and subcontractor pricing
  • Support Superintendent and Project Manager with subcontractor coordination, daily field oversight, and issue resolution
  • Review and interpret mechanical construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents
  • Help identify and resolve field issues; escalate critical items to the project manager with clear documentation
  • Maintain project logs including RFI logs, submittal logs, meeting minutes, and inspection reports
  • Coordinate with design engineers, inspectors, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) on behalf of the project team
  • Assist with punch list tracking, commissioning coordination, and project closeout activities
  • Travel to job sites throughout Greater Boston on a regular basis
  • Perform other duties as required to support project team goals

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field - OR - 3+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical or HVAC construction
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from mechanical, architectural, and civil construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordination with internal teams, subcontractors, and clients
  • Proficiency in document control platforms (Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or equivalent)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Motivated self-starter with a desire to learn and grow in the mechanical construction industry
  • Willingness to travel to job sites within Greater Boston on a regular basis

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Prior experience in mechanical, HVAC, or construction management
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or BIM/Revit tools
  • Basic understanding of HVAC systems, piping systems, or mechanical equipment
  • Experience with Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project scheduling tools

Compensation Range: $85,000-$130,000
