Position Overview

Reporting to the Program Manager of Roads, the Civil Engineering Student will gain knowledge and practical experience in the Civil Engineering career field. The student will be performing various tasks that align with theoretical principals taught in Civil or Transportation engineering post-secondary programs such as assisting in surveying, preparing, and reviewing technical documents and construction specifications, in addition to inspecting various municipal projects.

Please note this position requires the successful candidate to work on-site 5 days' a week at the Joint Operations Centre (2800 Rutherford Road).

Responsibilities
• Assists with detailed field inspections of road construction projects to ensure assets and the materials and methods used during construction comply with all related permits, regulations, standards and contract documents, drawings, and specifications.
• Maintains a project diary of work performed along with daily and weekly work forms, pictures, and documentation.
• Electronically uploads inspection forms, updates City databases, and upkeeps electronic records.
• Prepares asset inventory database and performs condition assessment.
• Assists technical staff with various project tasks including researching, compiling, and evaluating project data, program route planning, mapping analysis, preparing technical reports and performing design calculations.
• Assists with creating and updating mapping using GIS software and AutoCAD.
• Prepares contract documentation and supports with the development of tender specifications and cost estimates.
• Assists with daily administration operations.
• Attends coordination meetings with the project team or external stakeholders and prepares meeting agendas and minutes.
• Provides customer service, including meetings and phone calls with residents affected by construction projects, with the ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively.
• Builds and maintains positive relationships with colleagues, other consultants, and key stakeholders to ensure projects run smoothly and to resolve concerns promptly and efficiently.

Qualifications and Experience
• Currently enrolled in a post-secondary education institution at a recognized College or University in a Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering or Planning program and are returning to school at the next available term.
• Knowledge of civil engineering theory, and municipal construction and maintenance methodologies.
• Working experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. Knowledge of GIS (e.g. ArcGIS) and AutoCAD will be an asset.
• Proficiency with Video Conferencing tools including Microsoft Teams.
• Proficiency in Microsoft suite of products and Microsoft 365.
• Demonstrated experience in conducting informal and formal qualitative and quantitative research and experience analyzing and interpreting data.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations, and procedures.
• Ability to work well individually and in a team environment.
• Excellent report writing, communication, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated effective communications.
• Must have well developed computer skills.
• Must be highly motivated and able to take direction.
• Must be comfortable with field construction site work.
• Must have a valid "G" driver's license (in good standing) and have access to a vehicle.
• Must have access to personal cellular device with calling and access to mobile data.
• Must provide your own safety shoes or boots that meet the CSA "Green Patch" rating.
• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Working Conditions
• Outdoor field (on-site) work setting 80%, 20% in-office setting.
