We are seeking a motivated Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training with internship to a few years of experience working in a civil engineering and/or construction setting (prior hands-on subsurface exploration experience a plus!) with a strong desire to learn and grow to expand our team in Sea Girt, New Jersey. This is a field-forward position with a focus on learning and mastering the fundamental skills of a geotechnical engineer, developing a working knowledge of the geology within our practice areas and the challenges it presents to our projects, and learning and applying state and local regulations governing geotechnical engineering.

Key Responsibilities

As a member of our Geotechnical Services team, you will work with our Project Managers and Senior Engineers to:

  • Provide geotechnical engineering services to both internal and external clients
  • Support geotechnical studies that include site reconnaissance, geohazard assessment, subsurface exploration, soil/rock classification, in-situ testing, laboratory evaluation of soil and rock samples, and geotechnical engineering analyses
  • Oversee field exploration programs including coordinating exploration subcontractors and geotechnical laboratory testing, preparing field and report-ready exploration and test logs, subsurface sections, geologic maps, exploration diagrams, and photographic logs
  • Analyze data and prepare calculations supporting recommendations for foundation design, slope stability, retaining walls, support of excavation, dewatering, and pavements under the supervision of the Professional Engineer-in-Charge
  • Support preparation of geotechnical engineering proposals and reports as well as geostructural engineering designs under supervision of the Professional Engineer-in-Charge.
  • Observe earthwork, foundation, retaining wall and similarly related construction for conformance with construction documents and relevant standards

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited curriculum in Civil Engineering with documented concentration in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or Geologic Engineering
  • 0 to 4 years of relevant experience after earning your degree
  • Must have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and be designated as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT)
  • Competent user of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Beginner-to-intermediate level aptitude with AutoCAD (Civil 3D a plus) and/or ArcGIS to prepare project deliverables
  • Strong verbal communications and basic technical writing skills
  • Self-starter, organized, disciplined, and dependable with the capability to routinely multi-task across different assignments
  • Current driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites with occasional consecutive overnight stays and air travel
  • Physically able to perform fieldwork

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Prior subsurface exploration, soil and rock classification, and geotechnical report preparation experience desired but not required - we will train you
  • Familiarity with the IRC, IBC, and building codes throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER training
  • Experience with slope stability and/or settlement modeling software
