Design Engineering Manager

Job Description

Job Description

The Design Engineering Manager leads and continuously improves the operating model for predictable, high-quality execution of design engineering across sustaining, engineering change, and product development. This role oversees engineering workflows, systems, data governance, and team performance to ensure efficient execution from intake through release, trusted engineering data, and scalable operations. Success is measured by execution predictability, data integrity, and team effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Own global design engineering execution across sustaining, engineering change, and product development, ensuring consistent, on-time delivery across multiple sites.
  • Establish and govern engineering workflows, including prioritization, decision criteria, escalation paths, and performance metrics to drive throughput and minimize rework.
  • Provide CAD and design governance, including ownership of SolidWorks standards, templates, libraries, and technical review processes to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Serve as system owner for CAD and PDM platforms, managing configuration, access, workflows, and lifecycle controls in partnership with IT.
  • Lead configuration management and master data integrity across CAD, PDM, ERP, PIM, and downstream systems to support manufacturing, supply chain, and commercial operations.
  • Lead, develop, and scale the design engineering team, balancing workload and building a sustainable, accountable operating model.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Product Assurance, and Commercial teams to drive lifecycle optimization, VAVE, and continuous improvement.

Critical Success Factors:
  • Predictable, scalable execution: Standardized, multi-site workflows with clear ownership, strong metrics, and minimal rework.
  • Trusted systems and data: Reliable CAD, PDM, and master data with strong configuration control and lifecycle governance.
  • Sustainable operating model: A resilient organization built on standard work, governance, automation, and talent development, with future ECAD/MCAD integration in mind.

Qualifications:
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years of experience in design engineering, sustaining engineering, or engineering change management in a product-based environment.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design and engineering practices.
  • Experience with SolidWorks; ownership of standards or best practices preferred.
  • Experience with PDM/PLM systems supporting engineering change and configuration management.
  • Working knowledge of ERP systems and integration with engineering data (JDE a plus).
  • Proven ability to lead teams, operate within structured workflows, and collaborate across functions and sites.

Preferred Skills:
  • Exposure to CAD-to-ERP and master data integrations (APIs, digital thread initiatives).
  • Familiarity with ECAD outputs (e.g., Altium) and interest in strengthening ECAD/MCAD integration.
