Job Summary
The Department of Public Works Engineering Division is seeking a motivated Engineering Intern to join its team and gain hands-on experience supporting impactful infrastructure projects.

As an Engineering Intern with the Department of Public Works, you'll be at the heart of real-world projects that shape the community, from roads and bridges to accessibility and drainage systems. Working alongside experienced professionals, you'll contribute to planning, design, and construction for public works projects, building your skills with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD Civil 3D and GIS.

This role is more than just support; it's an opportunity to learn how engineering plans come to life, participate in project meetings, and help ensure projects meet quality and compliance standards. Hiring Range: $20.00 - $22.35 hourly

This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday - Friday, with core hours being 7:30 am - 4:00 pm and flexible hours permitted; subject to change.
Due to the nature of the role and its operational responsibilities, this position is not eligible for a hybrid or remote work schedule, as it requires full-time, on-site presence.

Under direct supervision, provides project-level and administrative support to the Department of Public Works (DPW) Engineering Division. Employment is subject to the terms, conditions, and policies detailed in the Personnel Policies Manual (PPM). This position requires regular in-person presence as an essential job function.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists with providing construction observation, surveying, inspection, and other related services for DPW construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Responds to inquiries related to engineering concerns or procedures for assigned project(s).
  • Attends design and construction progress meetings.
  • Assists with evaluations of pavement conditions, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, concrete improvements, and bridge assets.
  • Reviews traffic studies, drainage reports, condition assessments, and geotechnical investigations.
  • Works with engineering-related software, including AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS, Pavement Express, E-Builder, and CityWorks.
  • Learns to interpret engineering plans, project specifications, engineering standards, and other related documents.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Basic knowledge of principles and practices of engineering and administration, as applied to the design, methods, materials, techniques, planning, and construction of engineering projects, preferred.
  • Must possess a high level of organizational skills, initiative, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret engineering plans and documents.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical and scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, agencies, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to include seeking guidance when appropriate.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and work effectively with others.
  • Ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment including telephones, computers, printers, and copiers.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Ability to maintain the security of sensitive and confidential information.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Required Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Currently enrolled in a college program in a related field.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation and drug screen.

Work Conditions

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment. This is a temporary position typically not to exceed five months.
