Job Description

Job purpose

The Continuous Improvement Engineer is responsible for driving operational excellence across manufacturing processes, with a primary focus on improving efficiency, throughput, and overall plant performance. This role partners closely with Operations to optimize processes, reduce waste, and enhance productivity, while also providing leadership support for quality systems and compliance programs.

Duties and responsibilities

Continuous Improvement & Process Optimization (Primary Focus)
  • Lead initiatives to improve manufacturing performance by reducing cycle times, increasing throughput, improving yield, and minimizing scrap.
  • Partner with operations, maintenance, and technical teams to troubleshoot processing issues and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Establish and optimize machine set-up and processing parameters based on materials and equipment capabilities.
  • Develop and standardize operating procedures to ensure consistency across all shifts.
  • Analyze production data and review daily performance with Operations leadership to drive continuous improvement.
  • Design and execute experiments (DOE) and capability studies to validate and improve process performance.
  • Support capital projects by contributing to equipment specifications, trials, and justification.
  • Drive Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement culture across the plant.

Quality & Compliance (Secondary Focus)
  • Provide leadership and oversight of plant quality systems, including lab and process technician activities.
  • Support and maintain compliance with NSF, GMP, and HACCP programs.
  • Coordinate response to internal and external quality concerns and ensure timely resolution.
  • Contribute to audit readiness and execution, including documentation and corrective actions.
  • Manages and coordinates the NSF audit and GMP standards for the plant.
  • Immediately addresses and reports safety issues or hazards.
  • Maintains excellent safety record.
  • Maintains excellent attendance record.
  • Pick up the Quality Leadership supporting our NSF Food Safety & HACCP Programs.
  • Cover the internal performance management system/ OPX 360 requirements for 2.0 Quality and for 5.0 Continuous Improvement.
  • Work as a Business Partner with the Unit Manager in Operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience required:
  • 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment with demonstrated success in process improvement.
  • Strong background in Continuous Improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, or equivalent).
  • Experience working with mechanical processes and quality standards.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience required.
  • Experience in pulp, paper, or fiber-based manufacturing strongly preferred.
  • Food safety, GMP, or HACCP experience is an asset.
  • Gain Seeker experience is a plus.
  • Paper science or paper making experience highly desired.
  • Must have management/supervisory experience.

Skills

An individual must have the following skills in the CI Engineer position:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive results.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with SolidWorks or AutoCAD is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of process optimization, data analysis, and performance metrics.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Advanced mathematical and technical aptitude.

Education

BA/BS in Chemical, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering required.

A reasonable estimate of the current range is $83,600/yr. - $139,300/yr. + bonus + benefits. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within
the range, individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. At Novolex, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
