The Mechanical Engineer is the lead mechanical expert for rolling stock and supports maintenance and reliability of locomotives and coaches by identifying reliability issues, performing technical investigations and root cause analysis, and designing modifications to improve performance and reliability.

Salary Range: $90,000 - $135,000

Knowledge and Experience:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred (equivalent experience will be considered)
  • Mechanical experience in rail, transit, transportation or comparable field
  • Mechanical/technical knowledge of MBTA rolling stock equipment
  • Familiar with APTA, AAR and CFR 49 parts 218, 229, 236, 238
  • Experience working in a unionized environment

Skills:
  • Strong verbal and writing skills to successfully communicate with all levels of the organization, including shop maintenance personnel, stores and procurement personnel, managers, clients and suppliers/venders
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite and AutoCAD software
  • Exceptional planning, organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and make decisions for optimal results
  • Ability to coordinate a variety of tasks and assignments
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical systems including pneumatic and suspension issues
  • Experience working and modifying electrical, mechanical and pneumatic schematics
  • Experience with Asset Management Systems, such as Trapeze EAM

Key Accountabilities:
  • Leads investigations to troubleshoot, repair and document issues reported on the rolling stock fleet
  • Oversees repair, rebuild and modification projects as required
  • Creates and reviews Engineering Change documents for mechanical related equipment modifications
  • Supports the procurement department with the approval of new or alternate vendors, and to manage obsolescence
  • Provides written documentation/reports as requested or required per MBTA contract
  • Assists with hands-on training and mentoring as necessary
  • Performs periodic maintenance audits to review processes, tooling and adherence to specified processes;
  • Develops force account (supplemental) work projects, utilizing mechanical expertise to modify and improve rolling stock equipment.
  • Implements and monitors operational practices to ensure equipment reliability and quality while ensuring a safe and productive workplace
  • Subject Matter Expert for Wheel and Bearing Maintenance including oversight of Wayside Wheel/Bearing Monitoring systems (FleetOne, Salient, KLD)
  • Comply with all safety rules and procedures and report all hazards as required
  • Attends project and warranty meetings as needed to ensure that project/fleet managers are aware of issues to support new fleet and rebuild projects
  • Demonstrate and adhere to the Keolis Commuter Services principals of Employee Engagement, Operational Excellence & Safety, Customer Satisfaction, Corporate Social Responsibility and Economic Performance
  • Supports the operation during periods of extreme weather
  • Completes other duties as assigned
