R&D Engineer IDepartment: Engineering

Compensation: $60,000 - $75,000 / year
DescriptionAbout You:You are a curious, hands-on engineer who enjoys turning ideas into working hardware and improving how systems perform. You like building and testing electromechanical prototypes, solving problems methodically, and working closely with others to move designs from concept to reality. You're comfortable with ambiguity, eager to learn, and motivated by the opportunity to contribute to meaningful products in a fast-paced startup environment.
What you'll do:- Support the design, build, and testing of hardware prototypes and subassemblies.
- Assist with troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical issues on prototype systems.
- Build and modify test setups, fixtures, and basic tools to support development and verification activities.
- Collect, analyze, and document test data to help evaluate performance, reliability, and design tradeoffs.
- Collaborate with hardware, systems, mechatronics, and manufacturing teams to solve technical problems and improve designs.
- Prepare clear engineering documentation, including test summaries, build records, and issue notes.
- Contribute to design reviews, prototype iterations, and engineering investigations.
- Help maintain an organized, safe, and efficient lab and prototyping workspace.
What you'll need:- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, biomedical engineering, physics, or a related field.
- Internship, co-op, or 1+ year of experience in hardware development, prototyping, test engineering, or a related technical role.
- Strong hands-on skills and familiarity with basic lab, shop, or debugging tools.
- Ability to read engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Solid problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.
- Willingness to learn quickly and take ownership of assigned tasks.
Bonus points for- Experience with electromechanical systems, robotics, or diagnostic devices.
- Familiarity with CAD software such as SolidWorks.
- Basic scripting or programming experience for data analysis or test automation.
- Exposure to structured testing, root cause analysis, or verification and validation work.
- Experience in a startup, R&D lab, or prototype-heavy environment.
- An appreciation for puns and being part of a supportive, curious team.
