Mechanical Senior Project Engineer (PE) - Billings, MT

We are seeking a licensed Senior Project Engineer (PE) with expertise in mechanical systems, specifically HVAC and plumbing design. This role exercises independent technical judgment to provide mechanical technical oversight and resolve complex technical challenges, supporting project teams through technical leadership, project delivery, mentorship, quality oversight, and problem-solving. Additionally, the role leads and supports business development efforts related to mechanical engineering services, identifying opportunities, shaping pursuit strategies, and contributing to proposals and client discussions to support local and regional growth..

Responsibilities
  • Provide senior-level mechanical engineering and project delivery leadership for complex water and wastewater projects, contributing to overall project execution from planning through construction while ensuring mechanical scope is delivered on time, on budget, and in accordance with quality standards.
  • Lead and support business development activities through technical strategy, peer review, client engagements, proposals, and interviews as a subject matter expert to drive local and regional growth aligned with AE2S's strategic goals.
  • Serve as a technical leader and trusted advisor, applying advanced mechanical engineering expertise across project teams and disciplines.
  • Design and oversee mechanical design, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements on complex projects.
  • Conduct research and feasibility evaluations for new mechanical technologies and applications and provide recommendations to project teams and leadership.
  • Lead large-scale mechanical design projects, including project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and performance monitoring.
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance for quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) for mechanical designs, drawings, and specifications.
  • Provide mechanical engineering support during construction, installation, startup, and commissioning phases, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and resolving field-related technical issues.
  • Mentor, guide, and oversee the work of mechanical engineers and technical staff to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Lead mechanical coordination efforts across disciplines, ensuring integration of mechanical systems with civil, structural, electrical, and process components on complex projects.
  • Collaborate with external subconsultants and stakeholders to deliver integrated, high-quality solutions and resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Manage client relationships, proposal development, and identification and pursuit of new mechanical project opportunities.
  • Coordinate and participate in internal and external meetings with clients, stakeholders, and project teams.

Qualifications

Basic
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, multi-state licensure preferred or ability to obtain licensure within multiple states.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible mechanical engineering experience, including demonstrated technical knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems design.
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical engineering principles, building codes, and environmental regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly to clients and team members and develop technical documents from scratch.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects effectively, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Ability to travel as required.

Preferred
  • 10+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience in water and/or wastewater treatment.
  • AutoCAD + REVIT experience.
  • Building energy modeling experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Scope and fee development specific to mechanical design.

Physical
  • Ability to walk up to 3-miles on uneven terrain
  • Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Occasionally climb, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull light to moderate amounts of weight
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds, with rare lifting of up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • May be required to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to, flame resistant clothing, hard hat, and protective footwear
  • May require occasional evenings and weekends with overtime expectations varying with workload
  • May be required to travel to off-site locations including occasional overnight stays out of town
